Is there any explanation (whether historical or mystagogical) of the very unique character of the Vigil of the Epiphany? Notably, the existence of (First) Vespers; the three Nocturns at Matins; the Creed at Mass.
@Peter, Probably because the texts are those of the Sunday. If you look, for example, in the Dominican rite there are different texts for the Vigil (which correspond to pre-Tridentine sources) and the Sunday.
Why is there no 'Domine, labia mea', Invitatory and hymn in matins of Jan. 6?
