The eighteenth Sunday after Pentecost is of semi-double rite and its liturgical colour, from Mattins, is green. This year it is also the fourth Sunday of September. The Gospel pericopes from St. Matthew relate the healing of a paralytic, both by being forgiven his sins and being physically healed by the LORD.
Yesterday afternoon second Vespers of the feast of St. Matthew the Apostle and Evangelist were sung. The antiphons Iuravit Dominus etc., from the Common of Apostles, were sung, doubled, with Pss. 109, 112, 115, 125 & 138. The Office hymn was Exsultet orbis gaudiis. After the collect of the feast commemorations were sung of the Sunday (the antiphon on the Magnificat being Adonai, Domine for the Saturday before the fourth Sunday of September) and of St. Thomas of Villanova. The Suffrage of the Saints was omitted as were the Dominical preces at Compline.
At Mattins the invitatory is Dominum qui fecit nos and the Office hymn is Nocte surgentes. In the first nocturn the lessons are the Incipit of the Book of Judith. In the second nocturn the lessons are from a sermon of St. Ambrose on Elias and fasting. In the third nocturn the lessons are a homily from St. Peter Chrysologus on St. Matthew's Gospel. The Te Deum is sung. At Lauds the Office hymn is Ecce jam noctis. After the collect of the Sunday commemorations are sung of St. Thomas of Villanova and of SS Maurice & Companions. The Suffrage of the Saints is omitted.
At Prime Pss. 117, 118(i) & 118(ii) both Quicumque and the Dominical preces are omitted.
Mass is sung after Terce. The Gloria is sung, the second collect is of St. Thomas of Villanova, the third collect is of SS Maurice & Companions. The Creed is sung and the preface is of the Blessed Trinity.
At Vespers the antiphons and psalms of Sunday (109, 110, 111, 112 & 113) are sung. The Office hymn is Lucis creator. After the collect of the Sunday commemorations are sung of the following Office of St. Linus, of St. Thomas of Villanova and of St. Thecla. The Suffrage of the Saints is omitted as are the Dominical preces at Compline.
In the 'liturgical books of 1962' there is only a commemoration of the Sunday at second Vespers of St. Matthew. Mattins is cut down to a single nocturn. At Lauds there are no commemorations. At Mass there is but a single collect. At Vespers there are no commemorations.

I have another question about a particular office, but it can be answered in a generally valid way.
ReplyDeleteOn September 27 is the feast of Sts. Cosmas and Damian, the titular feast of my official parish church and therefore not semi-double, but a Double of the 1st class with common octave.
On September 28 is the anniversary of the Dedication of the Cathedral of my residential diocese, again Double of the 1st class with common octave.
• Question #1: Vespers on September 27
Since the anniversary of the Dedication of a Church is a feast of the Lord, its 1st Vespers takes precedence over the 2nd Vespers of the martyrs who are commemorated. — Correct?
• Question #2: Office on October 1
The simplex feast of St. Remigius falls in two overlapping octaves and is therefore replaced by a day 'de octava' (semi-double). The Office of the Dedication of the Church, as an Office of a feast of the Lord, takes precedence over the Office of the martyrs, which is why the Office of the Consecration of the Church must be taken on October 1. (The Mass is out of competition, as it must in any case be that of the 19th Sunday after Pentecost, due to the impediment caused by the feast of St. Michael the Archangel.) — Correct?

ReplyDeleteWould the feast of the titular(s) not outrank the dedication of the Cathedral as being more proper? Add. et Var. tit. II, 1. says that the feast of a titular only yields to primary doubles of the 1st class of the universal Church. Or have I missed something? I tried working this out a couple of years ago because the titular of the church I regularly attend falls on the same day as the dedication of the Cathedral. I thought the above rubric would mean the dedication of the Cathedral would have to be transferred.

ReplyDeleteI believe that only applies in occurrence, not concurrence c.f. A&V Tit. II, 2. I have checked West and Aertnys and have not found anything to suggest otherwise.
