The first week of Advent

  1. Can the Rorate Mass be celebrated on Saturday before dawn? If yes, are there any commemorations?

    Thank you.

  2. Anonymous,

The commemorations would depend on the diocese, the number of sung Masses being celebrated within a particular church etc.

  3. Following on the previous question about Rorate Masses, when are these Masses allowed "automatically" (i.e., without the further indults, which exist or existed, sometimes quite generously, in certain countries)? I thought the Rorate votive Mass was only allowed on ferias of Advent, but many such Masses have been announced for December 6 (S. Nicholas) and December 13 (S. Lucy) in various places, including around the United States, which I do not think had such an indult.

    1. Peter,
Good question. They do not seem to have been observed here on any noticeable scale. Looking at extant ordines there were various arrangements in some dioceses in Eastern Europe where the Rorate Masses could be celebrated most days within Advent. I agree the general rubrics would only allow the celebration on ferial days. WRT to the US I believe the primary driver for their celebration were churches in dioceses with strong Eastern European immigration and culture.
