Why doesn't the Dedication of St Peter and Paul have the ferial psalms ? The antiphons are not proper and it's not one of the feasts mentioned by the variationes

The feast of the Dedication of the Basilicas of SS Peter and Paul is a feast of the Lord.

Ferial psalms belong on ferial days IMO, not on feasts.

Not arguing with that, just trying to understand the Divino Afflatu rubrics

They are certainly complicated, indeed overly so. As I have said before if I were into conspiracy theories I would incline to the view the object was to make things so complex that a future simplification/reform would be welcomed and embraced.

One funny feature (if I have understood things correctly) : I follow a French diocese calendar and the octave day of the dedication of the cathedral is on the 19th of november. Its first vespers outrank the second vespers of the Basilicas which means that ferial psalms are used !

There are other, similar, examples e.g. ferial psalms on reasts within third order Octaves. What irritates me whilst compiling the Ordo is if on a Saturday a feast of the BVM occurs on Saturday and its Vespers is replaced by the Sunday with the Saturday psalms - or rather psalm fragments.

If I remember correctly, under the rubrics of Pius X, festal psalms are used on doubles of the II class and higher feasts, and also on major doubles if they are of the Lord, BVM, Angels, St John the Baptist, St Joseph or Apostles (so basically all categories except "ordinary" saints).

The way ferial psalms are used or not depending on the Octave and its rank is very random.

On an unrelated topic, I think the 1915 monastic reform should be more studied. I find it very impressive how much it anticipated the 55/60 reforms. I wonder who was behind it and what did they do afterward.

@Joel,
I do not think it is unrelated actually but a bridge between 1911-13 and the next stage of the reform in the Roman rite. If you search the Web for '7HolyCats' there were some detailed posts on the Monastic reform and how radical it was. The author sent me some notes but they are not mine to publish.

There were, of course, Monastics on the 1948 Commission.
