X Sunday after Pentecost

The tenth Sunday after Pentecost is of semi-double rite and its liturgical colour is green. This year is also the first Sunday of August. The Gospel pericope from St. Luke is of the parable of the Pharisee and Publican.

At Vespers yesterday afternoon the antiphons and psalms of Saturday were sung. The Office hymn was Jam sol recedit igneus. The antiphon on the Magnificat was Sapientia for the Saturday before the first Sunday of August. After the collect of the Sunday commemorations were sung of the preceding Office of SS Nazarius & Others, of St. Martha and of SS Felix & Others. After the commemorations the Suffrage was sung. At Compline the Dominical preces were sung.

At Mattins the invitatory is Dominum qui fecit nos and the Office hymn isNocte surgentes. In the first nocturn the lessons are the Incipiunt of the Proverbs of Solomon. In the second nocturn the lessons are taken from a tract of St. Ambrose on the 118th Psalm. In the third nocturn the lessons are from section from St. Augustine's 36th sermon on the words of the LORD. The Te Deum is sung. At Lauds the Office hymn is Ecce jam noctis. After the collect of the Sunday commemorations are sung of St. Martha and of SS Felix & others followed by the Suffrage of the Saints.

At Prime (Pss. 117, 118i & 118ii) both Quicumque and the Dominical preces are sung.

Mass is sung after Terce. The Gloria is sung, the second collect is of St. Martha, the third collect is of SS Felix & Others. The Creed is sung, the preface is of the Holy Trinity and there is a proper last Gospel for St. Martha.

Vespers are of the Sunday (Pss. 109, 110, 111, 112 & 113) and the Office hymn is Lucis creator. After the collect of the Sunday commemorations are sung of the following Office of SS Abdon & Sennen and of St. Martha followed by the Suffrage of the Saints. At Compline the Dominical preces are sung.

In the 'liturgical books of 1962' the first Sunday of August is next week so on Saturday the antiphon on the Magnificat was Fecit Joas etc and at the cut-down Mattins the first and second lesson are from the fourth Book of the Kings. There are no commemorations at either Vespers. The Suffrage of the Saints has been abolished. At Compline the Dominical preces are abolished. At Lauds there are no commemorations nor Suffrage. At Prime Quicumque and the Domincal preces are omitted. At Mass there is but a single collect and the last Gospel is In principio.

Whenever St. Martha's feast falls on a Sunday, with the rubric to read the Proper Last Gospel thereof, there is extra work to do in some of our parishes. The majority of laity have Lasance hand-missals, which (1) contains Pius XII's Mass for the Assumption, and (2) has the unedited notation under St. Martha's feast directing one to turn to 15 August for the Gospel! Doing so will not offer St. Luke's account of Martha and Mary at Our Lord's feet, but that of St. Luke's account of the Visitation.

So the attentive parish priest usually places the text for the Proper Last Gospel in the bulletin so as to avoid the sound of rustling pages which occurs when the altar missal is positioned on the Gospel side during the Placeat tibi.

Perhaps the answer would be to produce some suitably sized inserts with the traditional Mass of the Assumption?
