@Paulus, Because when a day within an Octave, or Octave Day, is preceded by another feast the Octave is commemorated using the antiphon from I Vespers, c.f. Additiones et Variationes Tit.VII, 4.
@Anonymous, Why don't you look at the Gospel appointed for each and that will give you the answer.
What does the the 'X' after the given color for the day mean? For instance, "AX" on Dec 14th and "RX" on December 16th. I understand that 'A' means "white" and 'R' means "red," but I cannot figure out the meaning of the 'X' and I did not see an explanation anywhere.
The Saint Lawrence Press is dedicated to the preservation of the classical Roman Liturgy and seeks especially to raise awareness of the process of liturgical reform before the Second Vatican Council. To meet these aims the Saint Lawrence Press publishes an Ordo Recitandi, in Latin, modelled on those produced in Rome in the middle of the last century before the unpleasant,
unfortunate, and damaging, changes of the 1950's and early 1960's.
The Ordo Recitandi contains the necessary information enabling those who wish to celebrate the traditional Divine Office and Mass to identify those variable parts for every day in the Liturgical year.

Why is the commemoration of the octave at second vespers of St Lucy taken from the first vespers?
Why aren't there proper Last Gospel from the Ember Wednesday in the Octave Day of Immaculate Conception?

@Anonymous 5thJan,
You need to look on p. 16 of the Ordo. 'X' indicates a private Votive Mass or Requiem in permissible.
