The second week of Advent

During the Octave of the Immaculate Conception, for Vespers each day, do we use the Magnificat antiphon from First or Second Vespers of the feast? Or does it vary, depending on whether the Vespers of the current day are of the Octave (in which case, presumably, we use the antiphon from Second Vespers), and on whether the office of the next day is of a feast or of the Octave?

As a follow-up to my question about Vespers during the Octave, practically it would seem that we always use the antiphon from second Vespers, except for when the Ordo specifically says: (e I Vesp)? I am just trying to understand the principle at work. Thank you for your invaluable resource!

Peter,
Basically, if a day's Office is not of the Octave, e.g. tomorrow's feast of St Damasus at Vespers on Wednesday afternoon the commemoration of the Octave is from first Vespers. On a day which is of the Octave then it is from second Vespers. Your first comment almost answers your question.

Rubricarius, thank you for that. I *think* I understand. So, if Vespers on Day A are of the Octave, and then Office of Day B is also of the Octave, then at Vespers on Day A we use the antiphon from II Vespers. But if Vespers of Day A are I Vespers of a feast (and the Office of Day B is obviously of the feast), then to commemorated the Octave we also use Antiphon from II Vespers of the I.C. But, if Vespers on Day A are II Vespers of a feast, and the Office of Day B is of the Octave, then we use the Antiphon from I Vespers of the I.C. So, on December 9 we have Office of the Octave followed by Office of the Octave = Antiphon from II Vespers at Vespers of the Octave (the office of the next day is of the Octave but since the preceding day whose Vespers we are celebrating is also of the Octave we don't use Antiphon from I Vespers, as we obviously don't need to commemorate the Octave). On December 10, we have I Vespers of St Damasus so in that case (for the commemoration) we also use Antiphon from II Vespers of the I.C., this time because the office of the next day is not of the Octave. But then on December 11, we have II Vespers of St Damasus and the office of the next day IS of the Octave, so in this case we use the Antiphon of I Vespers for the commemoration. That makes sense, if I am now understanding this correctly. In any case, blessed Advent and blessed Octave to you!

Peter,
Yes, you do understand. Basically if Day1 is de Oct and Day2 is also de Oct then on Day1 Vespers using the antiphon from II Vespers. However, if Day1 is another feast and Day2 is de Oct then on Day1 the antiphon from I Vespers is used. It gets slightly more complicated if the Octave Day is not observed but commemorated, as this year when on the previous day the antiphon from II Vespers is used.
