Should the Octave of the Sacred Heart be commemorated at second Vespers of the Precious Blood? It is a privileged octave. Or am I missing some other item? John
When the Ordo says "Conclus hymn ut in ordinario, etc." with the respect to the feast of the Precious Blood, does this simply mean that the standard doxology is used for hymn at Compline (on June 30) and at the Little Hours (on July 1), instead of the proper conclusion we've been using during the Octave of the Sacred Heart? If so, what is the rationale for NOT using the Sacred Heart doxology for the Precious Blood when it falls during the Octave?
John, The Octave is not commemorated because it is considered the same Mystery (Also why the Octave Day of Corpus Christi is not commemorated at first Vespers of the Sacred Heart).
Peter, I would not call it rational but it is because of A&V VIII, 1. As the feast of the Precious Blood has a proper versicle at Prime that excludes the Doxology of the Sacred Heart as that is associated with its own versicle.
The gospel of July 4 is proper. Ordinarily, this is no problem on the general calendar, since the day is free, but this year, the Mass of the octave is impeded by the octave of the Sacred Heart.
I’m missing something in the rubrics, then, because the SLP Ordo has this gospel on July 3, but the Restore the 54 has it on Sunday. I would have thought that the proper Last Gospel would simply be read on the impeded day in question, that is, today, July 4 at the Mass of the octave day.
For SS Peter & Paul there are three different Gospels from St Matthew: the first on the feast-day, the second within the Octave, and, lastly, the Octave Day. There is a rubric in the MR, and O'Connell (J.B.) saying it is the last Gospel on the 3rd July - the first day after the feast a commemoration of the Octave is made is that of within the Octave, Ecce nos reliquimus. So the Ordo is correct. Sunday will have the proper last Gospel of the commemorated Octave Day, Compulit Jesus. The rule is the last Gospel for a commemoration is read on the first day that commemoration is made but is not repeated on subsequent days. I'll try and add a shot of the rubric in the MR to the post.

so, let’s see if I’ve got this: because of the rubrics, no commemoration can be made until July 3, and so Eccentric nos reliquimus is read at the end of Mass that day, but it’s the Gospel of the subsequent day, not read as the Last Gospel if July 4 happens to be some other feast as is the case this year.
I remember July 3 fell on a Sunday a few years ago, which should have made me ask the question and remember the answer at that time…
Yes the rubric from the missal would be helpful. I’ll see if I can find a useful citation to send off to the other projects.
