Second Sunday after the Epiphany

The second Sunday after the Epiphany is of semi-double rite and its liturgical colour is green. The Gospel pericopes at Mattins and Mass are from St. John's account of the Marriage Feast at Cana.

At Vespers yesterday afternoon the antiphons and psalms of Saturday were sung. The Office hymn was Jam sol recedit igneus. The antiphon on the Magnificat was Suscepit Deus which will be used on all Saturdays when Vespers are of the Sunday until Septuagesima. After the collect of the Sunday commemorations were sung of the preceding Office of St. Marcellus and of St. Anthony the Abbot. The Suffrage was omitted as were the Dominical preces at Compline.

At Mattins the invitatory is Adoremus Dominum and this will be sung until Septuagesima. The Office hymn is Primo die and this will be sung at Sunday Mattins until the first Sunday in Lent. In the first nocturn the lessons are the Incipit of the Second Epistle to the Corinthians. In the second nocturn a sermon of St. Chrysostom provides the lessons and, in the third nocturn, the homily is from St. Augustine. At Lauds the Office hymn is Aeterne and that too is sung at Sunday Lauds until the first Sunday of Lent. After the collect of the Sunday a commemoration is sung of St. Anthony. The Suffrage of the Saints is omitted.. At Prime both Quicumque and the Dominical preces. are omitted.

At Mass the Gloria is sung, the second collect is of St. Anthony. Today there is no third collect. The Creed is sung and the preface is of the Blessed Trinity.

At Vespers the antiphons and psalms of Sunday are sung. The Office hymn is Lucis creator. After the collect of the Sunday a commemoration is sung of the following feast of St. Peter's Chair at Rome, of St. Paul the Apostle, of St. Anthony and of St. Prisca. The Suffrage is omitted as are the Dominical preces at Compline due to the double feasts.

In the 'liturgical books of 1962' there are no commemorations at either Vespers. Mattins is reduced to a single nocturn of three lessons. There are no commemorations at Lauds. At Mass there is a single collect. The feast of St. Peter's Chair at Rome has been abolished.

Rubricarius,

In the Roman Office before Pius X's reforms, if a (3+) Sunday after Epiphany or Pentecost is anticipated, which Matins responsories should be read?

I have found only 2 things:

(1) re: anticipation of 23rd Sunday after Pentecost or 3rd — 6th Sunday after Epiphany:

«fiat Officium de Feria, cum commemoratione Festi Simplicis, si occurrat; et in ea legantur tres Lectiones de Homilia Dominicae, omissis Lectionibus Scripturae illius Feriae: et in Laudibus dicatur Antiphona ad Benedictus, et Oratio de Dominica»

(2) re: anticipation of 2nd Sunday after Epiphany only:

«ponuntur Responsoria I. Nocturni Dominicae II. post Epiphaniam»

@Paulus,

Anticipated Sundays were far simpler in those days, indeed of simple rite. There were only three lessons, those of the homily of the Sunday, and the responsories were those of the first nocturn of the 2nd Sunday after the Epiphany.

Thank you!

Second question: if the Sunday is anticipated earlier than on Saturday, then which lessons should be read on the days after it? E.g., this year, if I understand correctly, the 4th Sunday after Epiphany is anticipated on Thursday and S Martina's semi-double office on Saturday has de Scriptura occurrente lessons in the first nocturn.

@Paulus,

That would depend on the vintage of the calendar you were using and the rank of the days within the week. Basically after the anticipated Sunday its 1st nocturn lessons would be transferred to the next day free of proper lessons, after that the lessons of the respective ferial day would be read in order e.g. on a Friday the lessons of Fer 6 of the week of the anticipated Sunday.

Third question!

What if the whole week has only feasts of nine lessons, so the anticipated Sunday is merely commemorated on Saturday, and the feast on Saturday has lessons de Scriptura occurrente? Are they taken from the week of the last "real" Sunday or from the first nocturn of the anticipated Sunday?

In that case the 1st nocturn lessons would be of the anticipated Sunday.
