XVI Sunday after Pentecost

The sixteenth Sunday after Pentecost is of semi-double rite and its liturgical colour is green. This year it is the third Sunday of September (and also the Sunday within the Octave of the Nativity of the BVM - although one might be forgiven for not noticing it). The Gospel pericopes from St. Luke tell of the LORD healing the man with dropsy on the Sabbath. The week ahead will see the observance of the September Ember Days.

At Vespers yesterday afternoon the antiphons and psalms of Saturday were sung. The Office hymn was Jam sol recedit igneus sung with the Doxology of the Incarnation (Jesu, tibi...Qui natus es etc) and the antiphon on the Magnificat was Ne reminiscaris for the Saturday before the third Sunday of September. After the collect of the Sunday a commemoration was sung of the Office of the Holy Name of Mary. The Suffrage of the Saints was omitted. At Compline Te lucis was sung with the melody and Doxology of the Incarnation and the Dominical preces were omitted.

At Mattins the invitatory is Dominum qui fecit nos and the Office hymn isNocte surgentes. In the first nocturn the lessons are the Incipit of the Book of Tobias. In the second nocturn the lessons are from a sermon of St. Leo on fasting in the seventh month. In the third nocturn the lessons are from St. Ambrose, a homily on St. Lukes's Gospel. The Te Deum is sung. At Lauds the Office hymn is Ecce jam noctis. After the collect of the Sunday a commemoration of the Holy Name of Mary is sung. The Suffrage of the Saints is omitted.

At the Hours the hymns are sung with the Doxology of the Incarnation. At Prime (Pss. 117, 118i & 118ii) both Quicumque and the Dominical preces are omitted. The versicle in the short responsory is Qui natus es.

Mass is sung after Terce. The Gloria is sung, the second collect is of the Holy Name of Mary. Today there is no third collect. The Creed is sung, the preface is of the Holy Trinity and the last Gospel is that of the feast of the Holy Name of Mary.

Prior to the reform of 1911-13 the Sunday within the Octave of the Nativity of the BVM was observed as the feast of the Holy Name of Mary. One Mass, but not the Conventual Mass, may be celebrated of the Holy Name of Mary in white vestments. The Mass Vutum tuum is sung with Gloria, the second collect of the Sunday, Creed, preface of the BVM and the last Gospel is of the Sunday.

At Vespers the antiphons and psalms of Sunday are sung. The Office hymn is Lucis creator, sung with the Doxology of the Incarnation. After the collect of the Sunday a commemoration of the Holy Name of Mary is sung. The Suffrages are omitted as are the Dominical preces at Compline.

In the 'liturgical books of 1962' today is the second Sunday in September and the antiphon on the Magnificat was In omnibus his for the Saturday before the second Sunday of September. At Vespers there are no commemorations and the hymns have the ordinary Doxology. Mattins is cut down to a single nocturn, the first and second lesson are from the Book of Job. At Lauds there are no commemorations. At Prime the ordinary versicle is sung in the short responsory. At Mass there is but a single collect and the last Gospel is In principio. Vespers are of the Sunday without any commemorations. The Ember Days are not observed this week but the following one.
